Honoring the Legacy of Merrill J. Bailey: A Life of Teaching, Love, and Lasting Influence

My father, Merrill J. Bailey, was more than a teacher—he was a mentor, a guide, and a source of unwavering support for countless people.  He dedicated his life to helping others see their worth, understand themselves, and build stronger relationships. Whether through his work as a religion teacher, counselor, or friend, his impact reached far beyond the classroom.  His lessons were about more than just education—they were about life, love, and becoming the best version of yourself.

A Teacher Who Saw the Best in Others

For over 30 years, my father worked in the Church Educational System (CES), teaching at high schools, universities, and seminaries. But to him, teaching wasn’t just about relaying information—it was about connecting with people on a deeper level. He had an incredible ability to see the good in everyone, especially teenagers, a group that is often misunderstood or underestimated.

He believed that young people were full of potential, wisdom, and strength. While others might have dismissed teenagers as difficult or rebellious, he saw them as capable, strong, and worthy of respect. He didn’t just teach them—he listened to them, encouraged them, and helped them believe in themselves. That belief in the power of young people has shaped me deeply. In my work with parents and young adults today, I carry his wisdom with me, helping families reconnect and truly see each other the way he saw his students.

The Power of What You Focus On

One of the phrases my father said often was, "What you focus on expands." It was one of his core teachings, both professionally and personally. He understood that our thoughts shape our reality, and he encouraged people to focus on growth, love, and possibilities rather than fear or limitations.

His deep understanding of human behavior was reflected in everything he did. In the foreword he wrote for From Here to Serenity, a book by his dear friend Jane Nelsen, he shared insights that continue to inspire people seeking personal growth and peace. His words reflected his belief in the power of self-awareness, responsibility, and compassion—principles that I now bring into my own coaching work.

A Life of Love and Service

Beyond his professional career, my father’s love for people defined who he was. He had an incredible ability to make everyone feel valued and seen. Whether you were a student, a stranger, or a lifelong friend, he treated you with the same kindness and respect. He never saw himself as better than anyone else—he simply wanted to help, to serve, and to lift others.

His life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and human connection. He didn’t just teach principles of kindness and understanding—he lived them, every single day.

Carrying His Legacy Forward

Everything I do through Peaceful Heart Journey is an extension of what my father taught me. His passion for helping people understand themselves, strengthen their relationships, and find peace is at the heart of my coaching work.

Through my courses, coaching, and outreach, I aim to continue his mission—to help parents and young adults navigate life’s challenges with compassion, connection, and understanding. His impact didn’t end when he passed. It lives on in the people he taught, the lives he touched, and the lessons he instilled in me.

Thank You, Dad

I am forever grateful for the way my father shaped my life, and I hope to honor him every day by carrying forward his love, wisdom, and belief in others.

If you had the privilege of knowing my father, I would love to hear your stories. How did he impact your life? His influence continues to ripple through the world, and I want to keep sharing his light.

With love,
Taralee
